Here Are The 7 Best Excuses For Not Getting Fit!
1) I Just Don't Have The Time
2) I'm Too Tired
3) I Cannot Get Away From My Children
4) Exercise Is Sooooooo Boooooring
5) My Joints Will Hurt After Working Out
6) I've Tried Before But Always Give Up
7) I Look Terrible And Everyone Will Stare At Me
You probably have others but let me address these "deadly 7"
So you are finally ready to start your new fitness journey with the best of intentions . . . telling yourself that you'll attend fitness classes at least 3 times a week; but, actually accomplishing it can be a lot harder than you expected.
You are already thinking about how you have to go to class; but, you also have job commitments and you have to make sure your house and family are taken care of before you can worry about yourself.
You're already talking yourself out of it before you even got started. Exercise has to be pushed to the bottom of the list since there are only so many hours in a day, right? Wrong!
Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. It's how you plan to spend and prioritize your time that is the real issue. It's easy to make excuses about why you’re not reaching your fitness goals, but until you take responsibility for your actions you will remain sitting on the couch wondering why your favorite jeans don't fit anymore.
Of course there are many legitimate reasons to not exercise. But unless you are ill, most of these reasons are simply just excuses. It's time to refocus and dedicate yourself to taking better care of yourself.
Here is a list of the 7 most common excuses and the simple solutions to erase them from your life.
#1 "I just don't have the time"
Let me ask you this...How much time do you spend watching TV or surfing the net? This time could definitely be put to better use. A couple of solutions would be to record your shows and watch them later or use the commercials to get up and do some exercises. If you really want to watch your favorite episode you could always take a walk on the treadmill while watching it. Unlike sitting on the couch this will strengthen your muscles, burn fat, lower your cholesterol and so many other healthy benefits.
Even if you don't have long periods of time, you can always break it up into shorter sessions. Any movement is better than none. The key here is to get your body moving.
#2 "I'm too Tired"
Working out actually is the answer to this problem! Your body releases hormones called endorphins which actually are an amazing energy enhancer! It's a great way to start your day, but if you’re not a morning person that's ok, just workout when you can.
Regular exercise actually is known to help improve your quality of sleep which means it'll help you have more energy throughout the day. As some of our past ZenFit participants have experienced, working out actually improved their sleep cycles, helping them fall asleep easier and sleep throughout the night, waking up more rested!
#3 "I can never get away from my children!"
This solution is very simple . . . workout with them. Go for a walk, do yoga, take them for a bike ride, or swimming. You can even find a local mommy and me class where your kids can participate with you. Instilling healthy habits in your children when they are young will help them want to live a healthier lifestyle when they are older. Plus, when mommy and daddy feel better and are happy, so are the kids!
#4 "Exercise is so boring"
There are some exercises that honestly I completely hate and you will not find me doing. We all have those things that are just not the right fit for us. Find an activity you love. Go dancing, walking, swimming, gardening. You don't have to hate what you’re doing, just get your body moving. If you find something you love, you'll be more inclined to do it more often. Make sure to change up your workout every so often so you don't get tired of the same routine.
You can also make a post on your social media or call a friend to see if they want to workout with you. You'd be amazed at how many of your friends are looking to try something new or just want a friend to workout with. This will help to hold you accountable also . . . so it's a win/win!
#5 "My joints always hurt after working out"
Find a low impact activity you enjoy. Make sure you’re constantly stretching to balance your muscles for a quicker recovery time. Yoga is a great low impact exercise that will be gentle on your body. Don't be scared to speak up and talk to your trainer as everyone’s body and fitness levels are different. They can help you find alternatives so you don't injure or hurt yourself. Also remember working out helps you lose excess weight which could be causing a lot of the discomfort you are experiencing. Listen to your body and do what you can. Remember you can always modify.
#6 "I've tried before and I always give up"
Set small realistic goals. As you achieve these and see the change you will push yourself harder. You'll be more likely to succeed if you start small. Have a workout buddy so your held accountable.
And always remember it takes time to form a habit. Do not beat yourself up if you fall off. Just start again. Tomorrow is always a new day. There is no perfect time, you have to make the perfect time.
#7 "Everyone is going to stare at me"
Although that big tshirt and sweat pants might be comfortable it can make you feel bigger and uncomfortable. Get a shirt and some yoga pants that fit comfortably and that you feel more confident in.
Remember that everyone at the gym has the same goal in mind and everyone has to start somewhere. You may be feeling self-conscious, but chances are no one is really paying attention you. And even if they are they're probably silently cheering you on for working towards your goals! Remember each individual there has had to walk into a gym or studio for the first time, everyone has been where you are.
